Verified Purchase. I personally loved Wind Waker on the Game Cube. I had no qualms about the cell-shaded graphics, nor the length of the original game. The HD remake is gorgeous and I'd recommended for new or old Zelda fans. Hyrule Historia is a nice addition, however it's a bit less enjoyable in digital form. I wish it also included Nintendo Land, but this made no impact on my choice to purchase the bundle.
I got this bundle primarily for the special gamepad. The gold bordering looks cool and won't scratch off as it's embossed in the plastic itself. Sure, this is a novelty that I'll forget about over time, but it's still nice to look at. Now that the XboxOne and PS4 are out, a lot of reviewers compare the system hardware and point that the Wii U is underpowered.
While this is true, I'd say the system performs well and serves its purpose as a gaming machine. I would not call the Wii U a complete entertainment system like the other two and plan to buy one of them in the future.
In my opinion, the weak point of this system is the lack of games. Yes, the system is getting more 3rd party games which might satisfy mature audiences.
But its been released for over a year and I still haven't seen many of interest. If you're into platformers you'll get the most out of Super Mario 3D Land. I'm looking forward to the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Overall, I feel that the system is a good successor to the Wii although the Wii really fell into obscurity in its last years.
I like the fact that you can use all the Wii's peripherals, and the gamepad streams flawlessly. However, Nintendo hasn't really changed from a gaming company, so if you're looking for a system that does everything, look elsewhere. The Wii U Windwaker Bundle is a fantastic deal.
This review will mostly reference the console itself and not Wind Waker HD however I will reference aspects of it in my review. In short, Wind Waker HD is a great update of a classic game that I believe is a perfect display of why many of the Wii U's new features are something to get excited about.
I bought the original Wii day one back in , and while I certainly did enjoy the motion controls and many of the Nintendo exclusive titles, I found that the novelty of motion control to wear off fast. That and the TONS of peripheral devices that went along with the system made playing some games feel like a chore. While I can't speak to the motives of Nintendo designers, I find that the controller works brilliantly.
I'd argue it's the best method of surfing the web on a console. In addition, it's application so far in the 3 games I've played is done very well. But my favorite thing is that so far Nintendo doesn't seem to be forcing the user to use the "neat features" of the controller in games.
For example, the controller has a motion sensor that can be used to aim the bow and arrow in Wind Waker HD. This method of aiming works very well substantially better than I had anticipated. However, if this method of aiming doesn't seem that appealing, you can easily turn it off and use the joysticks instead. On top of all this, Nintendo has begun to embrace online functionality and is doing their own unique spin on it.
Adding friends is much better than on the Wii, and all games have their own meta-social aspect to them that revolve around the Miiverse channel. How the Miiverse comes into play varies based on the game in question. In Super Mario 3D World, various Mii's from other online users would show up on the over-world map with various comments about their session "x" level was hard, There is a secret here, or just jokes.
Comments specific to a level could also be seen on the post level completion screen. In Wind Waker, players acquire an item that allows them to send messages in bottles. As you sail around the world, you can pick up these bottles to read these notes using the camera you can also send images of your game in the bottles as well. Because the internet is I don't recall seeing anything obscene or offensive during my numerous hours of plays also if you're concerned about messages containing spoilers, you can usually choose to not see messages classified as spoilers.
While there is still plenty more to say about the console, I will make my final point about the ability to play off the tablet controller alone. While I am usually able to use the TV as I need, not all people have this convenience. It's nice that you can use the controller to play a game using just the screen on the tablet within a pretty forgiving distance from the Wii U itself.
I found being able to just use the tablet to play games useful on many occasions. Some generic complaints I could see people having is that Nintendo is child-centric in nature.
